What is Lean Six Sigma?

Lean Six Sigma (LSS) is a management approach that focuses on improving performance through the elimination of waste and defects.

The combination of Six Sigma tools and methods with the lean manufacturing/ enterprise philosophy is called lean manufacturing. It aims to eliminate waste in terms of time, talent, and physical resources. Lean Six Sigma is a philosophy that teaches any resource use that does not create value to the customer should be considered wasteful and eliminated.

What are The Lean Six Sigma Belt Levels?

Lean Six Sigma certification is available at different levels depending on the training. The International Association for Six Sigma Certification, a globally recognized organization, conducts the testing and training for Lean Six Sigma certification. Similar to martial arts levels, the certification levels are divided by belts:

• Green Belt. Lean Six Sigma Green Belt is a course that focuses on applying the methods taught in the White Belt and Yellow Belt courses. Green Belt courses teach trainees how to plan and chart the roles that individuals play within Lean Six Sigma Teams, as well as how to use statistical tools to test processes.
• Black Belt. This belt certifies trainees as experts on the principles and philosophy of Lean Six Sigma. These people are known as change agents who offer training and provide thought leadership to complex team projects. Lean Six Sigma Black Belts are also responsible for training and coaching Green Belt project managers.
• Master Black Belt. This final belt in the Lean Six Sigma certification program teaches students how to perform multiple regression, calculate size for experiments and describe different types process optimization. The MBB is, in a nutshell, the pinnacle for Lean Six Sigma certification. According to IASSC the Master Black Belt exam is a closed-book, proctored test with 150 questions that takes approximately four hours to complete.
